About this listen

In pulsating polluted Kathmandu, and an idyllic village at the foot of the Himalayas, "Doctor Jane" and her engineer husband, Simon, hope to make a difference: Jane to fulfill her vision to heal and advocate for the poor, Simon to avert floods that threaten to devastate the country every monsoon. As they acclimatize and begin to absorb something of an accepting Nepali view of life, they find sanity, compassion, and joy with baby David, who in England was little more than an interesting medical case.

This is a tale of Himalayan highs and lows, of cultural complexities, unexpected wildlife, and rugged terrain, of vivid color, superstition, and spicy smells. A moving candid story of courage, love, and a family's determination to give their children the best life possible.

"The proverbial life-changing book." (The Daily Telegraph)

I really enjoyed this bittersweet memoir. As Jane read it there was a personal colour to everything and it evoked the life she and Simon had with their three boys in Nepal. The story of David’s short but powerful life was heartbreaking but inspiring. I hope some doctors and parents in difficult situations can take comfort in it and inform their decisions.
A wonderful story of love and loss as Jane has subtitled it.

A beautifully written true story, skilfully read by the author which made it all the more poignant. It’s an amazing heart-breaking account of a baby born with major health issues. Yet David was able to enjoy remote Nepali life and the people around him, the sounds of nature and his loving family members. Jane—the tale is from her point of view—is a super-woman coping with a never-ending string of challenges from her baby’s health care in the UK and living abroad. Even trekking for days at a time with her entire family high in the Nepali mountains where oxygen levels were low.

The tale is rich with description of the vegetation, wildlife and locals’ everyday life—as well as Jane’s—with plenty of fascinating anecdotes. Her older son provides much entertainment with his observations and questions. The book is scattered with humour from either Jane or Alex throughout. Her husband’s job as a water engineer and Jane’s attempts at introducing health education give insight to the patriarchal mindset and complex cultural differences of a people resistant to change. I cannot recommend the book highly enough. It was so gripping it only took me three days to listen to it—all 15 hours.

Utterly transfixing story

Brings you on an emotional and physical journey with Jane and her family, a truly wonderful and honest autobiography! Combining great travel writing with a beautiful story of love and some lessons you don’t expect to learn along the way.

I didn’t think I would enjoy audiobooks this much, but would recommend; really clear narration that makes you feel like you’re right there, experiencing Nepal and all the highs and lows with Jane! The chapter fade-in/out birdsong was also a really nice touch as well as the addition of an ‘up to date’ final chapter.

Beautiful story, wonderfully narrated!

From the start, Jane Wilson-Howarth's soothing voice draws you into her story of exotic Nepal with expertly judged dialogue and description that weave round you an atmosphere of a different world. Her experiences with her health-riddled newborn sting one to tears. It's an adventure inner and outer that is told by an author who articulates every word and nuance with sensitivity and clarity, bringing together her mentality, a modern medical technological one, with the vibrant humanity of a non-technological world. A story of love all round, an exploration into the unknown on so many levels, and well worth the listen.

This lovely account interweaves the challenges and emotions of a remarkable family life with evocative descriptions of life in that wonderful country, both in remote areas and those commonly visited. I very much enjoyed listening to it - as well as evoking memories for me, it taught me a lot. Thank you Jane

I love this book. It’s an open and honest account of Jane’s care for her disabled son, Jane and Simon making life-changing decisions, and stresses and fears about whether they had made the right ones. What comes across is Jane’s love for her son, her family, nature, humanity, languages and cultures. It’s a wonderful balance of living in a very different culture and landscape, Jane’s husband’s difficult work there, health, family life, travel, and wildlife. She gives evocative descriptions of the bugs, sounds, colours, people and unbelievable landscapes of Nepal. Jane’s voice is easy to listen to, her gentle humour, her utter sadness and joy of life. Amazing.

I loved listening to this book. The intensity of Jane’s life experience, the decisions she and her husband had to make, particularly their courage to go against medical professional advice and society's norm, was so admirable and humbling! I was very impressed with the descriptions of life in rural Nepal. Her description of sounds, colours, and textures helped create a vivid picture. Their adventures; trekking with the children up the Himals was particularly awe-inspiring. Her humour is evident when in the middle of grief and despair; she finds the sounds of birds or dripping water communicating to her. I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed reading the book as much as I did listening to it. Her narration is excellent.

This is a thoroughly engaging and thought provoking story. The use of local sounds at the beginning of each chapter transported me to Nepal and set the scene beautifully. In these difficult times, many lessons can be learned about how to cope and even thrive when the situation lurches outside of ones control.

Inspiring and unforgettable
