About this listen
Play for a husband. Don't fall for his enemies...
As the second-born princess of a kingdom conquered by a brutal empire, I'm nothing but a pawn. Little do I expect my parents to arrange my marriage to the most powerful bachelor of all: the son of the emperor himself.
But when I arrive at the imperial palace, I discover I must compete for my betrothed—vying with the court noblewomen in a series of humiliating trials to prove our devotion.
Those who fail will be executed.
For the sake of my country, I'll risk my life to win my husband—this sadistic man who applauds the torment and flaunts his lovers.
Unfortunately, my scheming competitors aren't my only enemies. The emperor's royal wards—princes of other conquered domains, held hostage to ensure their families' obedience—lurk in the shadows.
They see me as a traitor, prostrating myself for our tyrants' approval. The perfect target for their bottled rage. They'll do whatever they can to distract me, unsettle me... ruin me.
Forbidden as they are, I can't help being drawn in by their seductive wiles. Behind their simmering fury, their pain and broken hopes call to me.
They might be just the allies I need to save my life and my kingdom. But only if I can conquer these wicked men before I lose my heart.
*A Game of Veils is the first in a fantasy romance series with a sizzling enemies-to-lovers romance, smoldering morally grey men, and a determined heroine they'll regret underestimating.*
Perfect for fans of hot but damaged royal men, sweet but underestimated heroines, enemies to lovers angst, deadly trials, arranged marriages, forbidden love, found family, disability rep, and plenty of plot twists.

I enjoyed the Rites of Possession series and have been looking forward to the Royal Spares after their cameo in the final book. This didn't disappoint and had me hooked even more than Rites did. The foreboding started from Cici getting back into the carriage and the tension didn't let up. The trials were brutal and although I had high hopes initially Marclinus is on the wrong side of earning a redemption arc; he is pretty vile and enjoyed the trials as much as his father.
Aurelia is so resilient and I loved her development; I am intrigued by her and want to know her full backstory as she has some of her own secrets. Her relationship with Rochelle was a real highlight and one my favourite elements. I didn't enjoy the the mean girl schemes though as they were just really cruel however this was the definition of an every woman for themselves competition so the bullying wasn't unexpected.
The MMC's are fine with Lorenzo probably being the most prevalent; the focus was largely on the trials which they weren't a major part of so I'm interested to see what happens next when they have a little more page time; I think there will be a fourth but I wonder if we have met them yet.
I really love the mythology of the series and Aurelia's faith means a lot to her. I'm interested to see what other gifts we may see. I am still waiting for glimpse of the All-Giver though; I really hope they make an appearance at some point!
A Great Spin Off

Through it all Aurelia remains strong in her belief that she can make a difference and help those in need and pain. This story has a great plot and strong characters some of whom have been beaten down by years of abuse.
This is a brilliant adaptation and the narration is excellent. I look forward to the next book.
