About this listen

It's now becoming easier and easier to predict government policy. Just listen to what the prime minister said in the morning and the opposite is likely to be true come the middle of the afternoon.

Throughout another year of bluster and bedlam in Westminster, John Crace's brilliantly acerbic political sketches have once more provided the nation with a much-needed injection of humour.

In A Farewell to Calm, Crace introduces an infectiously funny selection of his finest pieces from 2020-21, taking in everything from a summer of unfathomable U-turns to Christmas COVID confusion and from lockdown-lifting to Brexit blithering.

Led by Boris' poundshop Churchill tribute act and featuring a cast of everyone's least favourite pantomime villains, from Classic Dom Cummings to Door Matt Hancock, the end result is a brilliantly entertaining chronicle of another tumultuous year on these benighted islands.

John Crace reminds us of the disastrous Johnson years

I read the Guardian for John Crace, the political sketch writer and this book recaps his commentary on Boris Johnson’s disastrous years as PM. It was useful for me to be reminded of the staggering lack of judgement and corruption of those years as you tend to forget in all the mess that followed. This book is very entertaining and funny but horrifying too. I don’t think many Tory supporters will enjoy it but, perhaps, they should read it before the next general election to discover the levels politicians can plumb to gain and stay in power.

Wonderfully acid text and brilliantly read

After 10 years in which the country has had to experience a phenomenal level of idiocy hypocrisy

Brilliant. Funny. Sad. Scary.

Another stunner. I loved this book. I don’t agree with the author's politics generally, but he has nailed it. I was a lifelong conservative, but no more - this book explains the journey of discontent. What makes this book and his last one work so well is the narrator. It's probably the best narration I’ve ever heard—absolute majesty regarding meeting writing with voice. Even if you think this will be a left-wing attack job, trust me, it’s brilliant, funny and sadly true. Again, I have to say that the narrator makes this work.

Laugh so as not to cry....

So sharp, so well observed, terrifying! The sense of helplessness it leaves when you haven't wanted to be part of this folly is overwhelming! It is sad to think that the readers are probably self selecting and the people who should read or listen to this book will go no further than glancing at what is by the way a brilliant cover and turn their eyes elsewhere.
Great delivery by George Weightman, perfect combination to bring out the well needed humour

Excellent. Chilling review of 2020/21 in UK.

John's native wit, intelligence and insight shine through in every minute of this recording. The performance was perfect, letting the words and meaning take centre stage. A thoroughly enjoyable listen, albeit to a tale of chilling dereliction of duty.

An unfortunate record

An unfortunate record of Tory sleaze and catastrophe led by PM Johnson aka The Known Liar

Brilliant

Brilliant writing and brilliant narrator. John Crace is a most perceptive and witty political sketch writer. I am in awe of his talent. George Weightman delivers his words so well. He even does a very accurate Boris Johnson! Too bad that Weightman didn't narrate the other books by John Crace.. A thoroughly delightful listen
