About this listen

Roddy Greenbank was brought by his father to the remote Northumberland community of Langley in the autumn of 1807. Within hours of their arrival, however, the father meets a violent death and the boy is left with all memory of his past life gone. Adopted and raised by old Kate Makepeace, Roddy found his closest companions in Hal Roystan and Mary Ellen Lee.

These three stand at the heart of a richly eventful narrative that spans the first half of the 19th century, their lives lastingly intertwined by the inexorable demands of a strange and somewhat cruel destiny.

A bit long winded at times and very abrupt ending

I love CC and over years have read pretty much all of them. I'd forgotten the length and the ending of this and I still can't help but feel there should have been more to complete the last part of this and the books themselves broken into parts in just one, should have been split into at least 3 separate novels; Hal Roddy n Mary Ellen. Ben Kate and the next generation in Hal n Mary Ellen's family and then the generation of the grandchildren and John n Maggie in mid life. As it is there's too much unsaid and not finished at the end of this and way way too much on Kate in the middle and it gets tedious. The first generation story with Kate Makepiece and the young Roddy Hal and Mary Ellen is the best by far. Perhaps Catherine was running out of steam or more likely was being pressured by the publishers to get it completed. Whatever the reason, it's not her best but it could have been and right up there with her pinnacle books if there had been more thought given to the marketing planning and probably more time allowed to Catherine to actually write it.

Completely riveting.

This saga kept me enthralled from beginning to end. it was long but never boring. I could have listened for days more.
The story line was ever moving and never predictable, and the characters with all their flaws very believable.
The narrator is brilliant, giving each character their own voice.
This isn't the first I've listened to with this duet and it won't be the last. Thank you.

The best book I’ve listened to in a long while!

A most absorbing book which has held my attention for many hours! It is rich in story, characters and detail and so well narrated by Anne Dover who puts her all into every character. Catherine Cookson excelled herself in writing this book…….

Good story

This book was read so as to make the listener able to almost see the characters and place and feel apart of it . I would recommend this book.

I didn't want this book to end

I have never been so involved with a book. Every twist and turn of the saga led me further in. The length of the book was magnificent. Such a delight to hear Anne Dover (my favourites narrator) telling this clever and beautiful story. Bravo Catherine Cookson. A favourite listen for sure
Listening to this book gave me the chance to think of my darling Mum who often would encourage me to read the books by CC , I was reading this book with my Mum in mind the whole time. Such a moving and wonderful feeling to be back with her again

Loved it!

I have been hoping for this book to be included in Audible for quite some time...l read it as a very young adult but it was one of my lovely Mumma's favourites.
Listening to it was like sitting and holding my Mum's hand...beautiful memories and a lovely well rounded story. Thank you so much.
