About this listen

A Desolation Called Peace is the spectacular space opera sequel to A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine, winner of the 2020 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

An alien terror could spell our end....

An alien threat lurks on the edges of Teixcalaanli space. No one can communicate with it, no one can destroy it, and Fleet Captain Nine Hibiscus is supposed to win a war against it.

In a desperate attempt to find a diplomatic solution, the fleet captain has sent for a diplomatic envoy to contact the mysterious invaders. Now Mahit Dzmare and Three Seagrass - both still reeling from the recent upheaval in the Empire - face an impossible task. They must attempt to negotiate with a hostile entity, without inadvertently triggering the destruction of themselves and the Empire.

Whether they succeed or fail could change the face of Teixcalaan forever.

Phenomenal performance brings this excellent novel to life. A pleasure to listen to. I particularly liked the mirrored and reflected themes throughout, with strongly defined characters and an engaging story. Highly recommended.

Another excellent novel by Arkady Martine

Very Very good book, Even better thank the First !Pleasingly this book sang to a rewarding and well paced finish. (not an epilogue! !) which is something that seems to be a rare skill lately . Take your time and enjoy it. Thanks Martine.

the narration is amazing, Martine's writing is beautiful. A fantastic story and I hate writing reviews but this deserves one.

Good sequel that was a bit better than the first one. Much to build on for future books.

Better sequel

This is a great book, fantastic science fiction: memorable characters, fantastic world building, exciting themes. It's a really deserving sequel to the first book.

The only caveat is that the audio can be a bit hard to listen to at times. I don't think that this is the reader's fault: the author really likes inserting quite lengthy parenthesis into sentences (often depicting the characters side thoughts or motivations) and this proves quite hard to read aloud. I imagine that this is fine on the page and in one's head, but it is clunky in audio book.

Great ambitious science fiction
