About this listen

The new twisting mystery from CWA Historical Dagger 2014 winner Antonia Hodgson.

Late spring, 1728, and Thomas Hawkins has left London for the wild beauty of Yorkshire - forced on a mission he can't refuse. John Aislabie, one of the wealthiest men in England, has been threatened with murder. Blackmailed into investigating, Tom must hunt down those responsible - or lose the woman he loves forever.

Arriving at the grand estate of Studley Royal, Tom realises that the threats to Aislabie and his family must be connected to someone in the house itself. Could one of the servants be responsible? And what of the mysterious Mrs Fairwood, the young widow who claims to be Aislabie's lost daughter?

Far from the ragged comforts of home, Tom and his ward, Sam Fleet, enter a world of elegant surfaces and hidden danger. Someone is determined to punish John Aislabie - and anyone who stands in the way. As the violence escalates and shocking truths are revealed, Tom is dragged inexorably towards the darkest night of his life.

Inspired by real characters, events and settings, A Death at Fountains Abbey is a gripping stand-alone historical thriller. It also continues the story that began with the award-winning The Devil in the Marshalsea and The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins.

clearly a series

that'll give good and interesting characters from a period with few authors addressing it. I look forward to the next one!

Another winner

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Tom Hawkins is a plausible and entertaining central character in this series, which gets better and better. There's a strong sense of English life in the early 1700s, with characters and language that's rich and diverse. I particularly like the way each story is woven around historical fact. There's tension, humour, murderm mystery and a large slice of social life.

What did you like best about this story?

Tom is faced with a very different scenario this time. Tasked by the Queen, he has to leave London and travel to Yorkshire to retrieve a ledger involved with South Sea Bubble collapse. It's a fascinating journey with characters who seem to live.

What does Joseph Kloska bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A great sense of pace and drama and good voices.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I just keep rooting for things to work out and there's plenty of drama in this tale to draw the listener in emotionally.

Any additional comments?

Works well as a stand alone, but better if you read the first two books as the back story to a number of characters is developing with each tale. A genuinely gripping series.

the adventures of Thomas and friend

This is the 3rd book in the Thomas Hawkins series and though it has 2 predecessors it can be enjoyed as a stand a!one book too.

The narration was superbly done.

It does tend to fall off in the middle it is well worth sticking with.

Characterisation is developed through the books and adds to what went before, though as I said it is not necessary to have read/listened to the previous books first.

Overall a good way to spend some time.

very enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. It was full of twists. You don't need to know the other books in the series (I didn't)

My least favourite so far but still a decent read.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, I usually listen whilst driving so anything is better than nothing

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The beginning was intriguing but then went a bit flat. The previous two Thomas Hawking books were far better stories.

Have you listened to any of Joseph Kloska’s other performances? How does this one compare?

They are good and solid performances with a good feel for the characters voices.

Was A Death at Fountains Abbey worth the listening time?

Yes. A good yarn but some of the twists and turns a little hard to follow.

Poor

I have not finished this audible book as it is Spoilt by the unnecessary use of offensive language, I’m not a prude but it seems to be in line with the the modern idiom that uses this method to convey emotions such as anger when there are plenty of alternatives available.

Let down by poor editing

Would you try another book written by Antonia Hodgson or narrated by Joseph Kloska?

Have listened to all 3 books in this series, well read, with good characters and plots, but severely let down by poor editing and regularly repeated lines.
