About this listen

As worlds collide…

Hatushaly, last scion of the Firemane dynasty, his beloved Hava, and their dubious friend Donte have been transported across space and time from the war-torn world of Garn to the relative peace of Midkemia.

There, on Sorcerer's Isle, under the guidance of the magician Magnus and his erstwhile father Pug, in his reincarnated form, Hatu will explore and expand his unique magical abilities.

With the evil Pride Lords defeated, the Church of the One has risen to bring death and destruction to his home world. The Church is sending forces against Marquensas, where Daylon is now king, and Declan Smith finds himself suddenly and unexpectedly raised to the status of prince and war commander.

But an even greater menace than the Church of the One lies in wait, a creature from the Void, bent on the destruction of all living things.

Pug, Nakor and Magnus will need to join forces with Hatu, Hava and Declan if they are to save the worlds of Midkemia and Garn from everlasting darkness…

A spectacular new epic series from the globally bestselling author of MAGICIAN.

Excellent story. Narrator isn't as good as the old ones, odd pronunciations and inconsistent, not always great voices

being back Peter Joyce

Much of the storyline is recycled from earlier books, but it’s still a thrilling read/listen & I can’t wait for the next book. The only downside for me was some of the childish voices that the narrator uses - the worst of which is Nakkor’s, which is just painful to listen to. A shame, since most of the others are done really well.

The story continues…

I'm not quite sure where to start with this and what I'm struggling with the most. It could be the narrator having no knowledge of the lore, the mispronunciation of characters and place names. Also some of the voices such a Nakor are completely off character, which spoil the atmosphere.

It could be that characters just won't stay dead either. I've lost count now how many times this has happened. There's no suspense or drama to a main character dying. You know they will be back eventually.

Maybe it's the recycled type of story, the reanimated characters or the rather weak plot. Probably a mix of all the above means I'm not enjoying this book and struggling to finish it.

I'm a big fan of Feist and read everything he has done, much of his work has been incredibly well thought out, with a rich world and lore.

There's enough here for most die hard fans of Midkemia, if you can get past the fact that Peter Joyce isn't present, but if you are looking for something fresh with new ideas and twists, I'm finding this rather lacking.

A hard listen

I liked the start of the story and narration in parts. Then I felt the story started repeating old themes too much. It didn't help that also some characters returned from the dead.

A bit disappointing

Feist is a legend, I am overjoyed that his recent series has returned to the RiftWar. I both read and listened to this book. I enjoyed the story very much, however this narrator bugged me on the last series, but it’s even worse on this book. Perhaps some of it is the editing or production. My niggles: there are big pauses at the end of sentences AND before reading dialogue tags (‘he said’ etc). I listen in x1.25 speed too; his reading is both too jolly and matter of fact; his range of voices isn’t great.
That saying, I’m an and always will be a massive fan of Feist.

Another Great story

Hatushally is an epic plot device Mary sue.

He is immediately the best at everything, learns and understands everything immediately or very quick.

He can do and replicate anything, either because he is great and understand energy lines or “I can just do it, I don’t know how”.

He has no journey and no trials, he is just the best at everything immediately.

Outside of this, the quality is lower than his earlier books, the story craft is weaker and less engaging. Fan service is evident by the undeading of key people, the purpose of which is slightly refuted by the fact that Hatushally is just the best at everything immediately.

A Mary sue among Mary sues

I was overjoyed to see another midkemia title, incredible as usual however it was made tough to listen by the narrator, Peter Joyce was a tough act to follow but was really dissatisfied with this chaps rendition of a long awaited title close to my heart.

I CANT BELIEVE HE WROTE ANOTHER!! shame about the narrator.

Excellent narration

Slightly weird story. Got a bit timey-wimey and existential which definitely detracted from the awesomeness of Pug reborn.

But also, Pug…version 2. Love Pug. Love Nakor.
Might have to go back and read the original series again.

Will obviously continue to buy everything Raymond E Feist writes

Solid Audiobook

Great read, old characters mixed with new. Spoiler alert Pug!! Looking forward to next one.

Standard feist

I have all of Feist's works and love the books narrated by Peter Jackson. I'm afraid to say that the narrator for this book seems to be a massive cost saving as it's shocking.

Many characters voices sound the same, awkward pauses, and clearly doesn't know the work as many mis pronounced words (I actually speak to Feist on Facebook quite a lot and was shocked to discover he has no say in the Audible voice acting!)

Cry-dee is where Pug is from, not Cridd-e as this narrator says - one of many mistakes!

Amazing book completely ruined by reader.
