About this listen

This program includes a bonus novella, Death and Night, written by the author.

From the author of The Star-Touched Queen comes a beautiful lush fantasy, Roshani Chokshi's A Crown of Wishes.

Gauri, the princess of Bharata, has been taken as a prisoner of war by her kingdom’s enemies. Faced with a future of exile and scorn, Gauri has nothing left to lose. Hope unexpectedly comes in the form of Vikram, the cunning prince of a neighboring land and her sworn enemy kingdom. Unsatisfied with becoming a mere puppet king, Vikram offers Gauri a chance to win back her kingdom in exchange for her battle prowess. Together, they’ll have to set aside their differences and team up to win the Tournament of Wishes – a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor.

Reaching the tournament is just the beginning. Once they arrive, danger takes on new shapes: poisonous courtesans and mischievous story birds, a feast of fears and twisted fairy revels.

Every which way they turn, new trials will test their wit and strength. But what Gauri and Vikram will soon discover is that there's nothing more dangerous than what they most desire.

This book is the first I've listened to by this author and it just isn't for me. At the beginning I had to check if I'd skipped chapters as I felt as though I was half way through the book. I couldn't visualise the characters, or the world it was set in despite how verbose the author was. The author said a lot, and yet none of it meant anything to me. To be honest I didn't know what was going on. I couldn't connect to either character and gave up trying with six hours left to listen. I've seen pretty much all amazing reviews for this book and am genuinely baffled as to how people have loved it. The plot was paper thin, the world building virtually non existent, and the characters weren't fleshed out. Gauri's sister was mentioned so often that I thought she had to be a main character and kept waiting for her to arrive. I was under the impression that you didn't need to have read the first book to be able to listen to this one, but maybe it would of made more sense to me as I still feel that the book started in the middle of a story.
I've seen this author writing style compared to Laini Taylor's. Seriously?? I genuinely don't get it.

The narrator was ok, her tone of voice was nice, but her character voices weren't distinct enough for me. The main character narratives and the actual story were the same. It all just blurred into one. I'll be asking for a refund on this one.
