About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Simon Serrailler finds himself in devastating new territory as a sophisticated drugs' network sets its sights on Lafferton and the surrounding villages.

DCS Simon Serrailler has long regarded drugs ops in Lafferton as a waste of time. Small-time dealers are picked up outside the local secondary school; they don't have any information about those higher up the chain; they're given a fine or a suspended and away they go. And rinse and repeat. But when the body of a 22-year-old drug addict is found in neighbouring Starley, the case pulls Simon into a whole new way of running drugs. The foot soldiers? Vulnerable local kids like Brookie and Olivia, who will give Simon a bitter taste of this new landscape.

It is a harsh winter at home as well as work. Simon's GP sister, Cat, and her husband, Kieron (also Simon's boss), are struggling with medical dramas big and small. A trip to Bevham General on her rounds sets off alarm bells for Dr Cat, and a visit from her son, Sam, as he tries to work out if his midwifery course is right for him coincides with a threat to their beloved family dog. Simon is working hard, but he's restless, wondering what next. There's nothing new going on for him in Lafferton, but sometimes the familiar holds surprises, too....

I have always emitted this series, both story and the excellent narration, but it was good to see Simon's character being allowed s bit more softness this time, and it didn't take away from the story at all.

Poignant

Enjoyed as usual, although not as much depth to the storyline unlike previous books. Steven Paceys narration,as always excellent.
Eagerly awaiting next chapter in the series, which hopefully, will be sooner rather than later.

Long awaited.

Just loved this, I hope it continues as it gives an all round investigativework story including the family background . Excellent narrator. May read if again!

Excellent read again

Love the way this series combines an ongoing family story with a new crime drama in every book. Get so invested in these familiar characters and the ups and downs of their lives and the gritty crime investigation rounds it off completely. Hope there will soon be more of this brilliant series.

Just love Simon Serrailler

Because it finished too soon! Needed at least one Mr Big to die horribly after his identity was revealed, and unconvincing choice for Simon to close on. So sequel wanted SOON!

Four stars for the story

as are all the stories in the Serrailer series. Susan Hill puts real conversations in the mouths of real, believable people. Serrailler is brilliant in her hands!

Excellent,

Good story, and very good narration. The county lines drug story and understaffed NHS are details which provide interest.

Usual good story

I have just listened to the entire series without break. It was excellent - an intelligent, adult police series, intermingled with medicine. Well drawn characters, and storylines that tackle topical and difficult subjects. I can’t understand why this brilliant series of books has not been made into a tv series yet. The narrator was incredibly easy to listen to and his intonation was spot on. My one complaint is that there are no more in the series!

What on earth to read next?

I have absolutely loved the Simon Serailler series. I love the interplay between what is ultimately a whodunnit crime story and the personal lives of the characters- who the reader gets more invested in each time you read a book in the series. I have read all of them now and can’t wait for another to be written.

Steven Pacey’s ability to narrate is the best I have ever heard- by far. He brings the books to life and I feel as though I am listening to a play! Every character has their own distinct voice- and he never fails to pick up the same voices in each book for the same character- even the young lad, Sam- who over the course of the entire series of books, grows up- his voice breaks- and Steven Pacey tracks that realistically. Steven I’d a master of his craft. I am now seeking out what else he has narrated.

Fabulous

I also was confused by the end. The crime plot came to nothing and the sudden get back together of Simon and Rachel was unconvincing. A pity as I'm a great fan of the series

Sudden end left me confused
