Crush (n.): a strong and often short-lived infatuation, particularly for someone beyond your reach . . .
Darcy Barrett found her dream man at age eight - ever since, she's had to settle for good enough. Having conducted a global survey of men, she can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that he's her twin brother Jamie's best friend - oh, and that ninety-nine of the time, he hasn't seemed interested in her.
When the twins inherit their grandmother's tumble-down cottage, they're left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory. Darcy plans to leave as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run - her usual MO - she finds a familiar face on her porch: Tom's arrived bearing power tools, and he's single for the first time in almost a decade.
Suddenly Darcy's sticking around. Sparks start to fly - and not just because of the faulty wiring. But a one percent chance with Tom is no longer enough. This time around, Darcy's switching things up. She's going to make Tom Valeska ninety-nine percent hers.

This little beauty however has cemented it's place in my solid favourites. It's the romance novel for the women of today. Darcy Barrett is a fantastic character she is this incredible relatable, strong, feminist, bad ass who deviates from the norm of your average air head plastic instagram model type as far as it is possible to bend. She drinks too much, her life is a mess and she's raw and vulnerable and just a joy to read, relate to, fall in love with and ultimately root for.
The compelling main character aside I constantly caught myself thinking the book itself was brilliantly written. Everything from the introductory chapters that set the scene to the fights that the characters get into are engaging and heart wrenching but above all I feel like it's very real. Too many times in this kind of genre the author just creates obstacles to keep the love interests apart for the sake of adding sexual tension but it is never usually done this well. It always ends up reading like filler and can get very boring very quickly but not here. I cannot praise the author enough. I don't want to give away spoilers so to summarise:
Real, relatable, laugh out loud funny and heart wrenching. I will be re reading soon 💛
As a side note, the narrator does a fantastic job. I think she was cast PERFECTLY because her voice matches with the image of the character I have in my head brilliantly. A well deserved 5 Stars.
SOMuchBetter than the blurb would have you believe

Darcy Barratt is a twin, the weaker runt and her twin Jamie, well let me say, I hated that guy and his influence on the characters in this story (even though I suspect there's a story that could come from him). Darcy and Jamie had another half to them, Tom Valeska, unofficial adoptee into the Barratt clan. Darcy has loved him forever but their life has been missed opportunities and it has always been easier for her to up and leave.
Tom Valeska (I can't help saying his names together, forgive me) is solid in the friendship stakes, a support, a protector, a wannabe saviour. He comes to renovate Darcy's grandmother's house and therein starts the literal magnetism between these two. Holy chemistry, I cannot explain the draw between them and I felt right in the middle of it, like iron filings. This was a burn of slow proportions but the absolute furnace it created, blew me away. I could not put this book down, nor would I want to. It is very unlike me to feel drawn back to a book immediately but I just know I will have to read and immerse myself once again.
Sally Thorne has followed up The Hating Game with something totally different and entirely as good. No one writes dialogue like Ms Thorne and she has amply shown her diversity and also her consistency. Sorry for the glow-y-ness but I am still riding high on feelings here and I hope you will be too.
Re-read by audio June 2019 was a delightful experience. The narrator was perfection and really brought Darcy's character to life. I loved revisiting the story.
Delightful, funny and sometimes emotional
