 新宿の女郎・おすみは惚れた男芳次郎の眼病を治すため、「おっ母さんが無心してきたので、二十両を用立ててほしい」と嘘をつき、なじみ客の半七にねだる。そして、同じくなじみ客で、向かいの部屋に待つ田舎者の角右衛門のもとへ行き、「おっ母さんが病気で、高い薬の人参を買ってやりたい」と嘘をつき、三十両をせしめ、あわせて五十両を得る。受け取った芳次郎はそそくさと帰るが、おすみは置き忘れられた手紙を見つける。読んでみると、小筆という別の女が「五十両を要求されている。眼病と偽り、おすみをだましてしまえ」という内容が書かれている。その頃、半七もおすみが置いていた手紙を見つけ、芳次郎の名で「眼病をわずらい、薬代二十両がいる。母親に無心されたと偽り、半七をだましてしまえ」と書かれていたので、怒り狂う。おすみが半七の部屋に戻るやいなや、ふたりは、すさまじい喧嘩になる。もれ聞いていた角右衛門は若い衆に、「おすみが可哀想だから止めてやってくれ」と頼むが．．。(C)1976 日本コロムビア株式会社 Performing Arts
