Валентин Саввич не думал писать этот роман (которому он впоследствии даст название "Площадь Павших борцов" и первый том которого - "Барбаросса" - представляется на суд слушателей) - его, как известно, интересовали более отдаленные по времени события. И лишь когда стали известны подробности гибели отца, он обратился к изучению событий Сталинградской битвы. О Сталинградской эпопее написано много - книги историков и мемуары фронтовиков составляют солидную библиотеку, немалую часть которой Валентин Саввич детально изучил. Он использовал более 500 историко-архивных источников, монографий, воспоминаний отечественных и зарубежных очевидцев.
