神奈川県川崎市にあるチョーク製造会社・日本理化学工業株式会社は、昭和12年に小さな町工場からスタートした。昭和36年に二人の少女を雇い入れたことをきっかけに、障がい者雇用に力を注ぎ、「日本でいちばん大切にしたい会社」として全国から注目を集め続けている。
現在も社員83名のうち、62名が知的障がい者。一人一人の能力に合った仕事を作ることで、彼らが製造ラインの主戦力となり、社員のほとんどは定年まで勤め上げる。同時に、彼らの作るダストレスチョークは業界シェア１位を誇る。
今でこそ福祉と経営の両面で注目を浴びるが、ここに辿り着くまでには数々の苦悩と葛藤があった――。
本書は、日本理化学工業の会長や社長、働く社員、さらには、普段語られることの少ない障がい者のご家族へのインタビューを通して、「働く幸せ」を伝える一冊。
