母、兄、おれ、妹――家族全員に疑いが掛かった。
第一発見者は妹だった。現場には兄とおれしか持っていない麻のハンカチが落ちていたという。兄は父の遺体の前で着物の帯を落とし、それを拾うふりをして何かを拾った。おれは兄を疑っている。あのハンカチだって兄のものに違いないのだ。
だが、兄は母を犯人だと思っていた。母は父の暴虐を二十余年もの間耐え忍んできたのだ。兄が現場で拾ったのは母の櫛だったのか……？
そして、妹はおれが犯人だと疑っている。
家族同士が疑い合う地獄……だが事件から一か月後、とうとうおれは犯人を突き止めたのだ。それは……
＜江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）＞
日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。
