私は友達と近くの原っぱへ散歩に出かけた際、小川の岸に生えていた一叢のある植物を見つけた。
それは、どこにでも生えている雑草だが、実は堕胎の薬であり、昔の産婆などが秘宝のおろし薬として用いたのはこの草だと話すと、自然の事物にあまり興味を向けなかった友人も大いに好奇心を起こしたらしい。
それはどうやって用いるのかなどを訊いてきた友人に詳しい方法を教えた。
その中から、二人の話題は産児制限問題の話に移っていった。
ただ、それが本来必要とする、貧しい家の人々ではなく、不必要なはずの裕福な者たちの中で起こっている……などと私と友達は大いに論じたのである。
ところが、私はこの話を郵便配達夫の子をはらんだ女房に聞かれていたことに気付く。
その家も貧しく、たくさんの子の子育てに四苦八苦していた家だ。
彼女が更に負担を強いられ、さらなる貧しさの元となるお腹の子をどうすべきかを想像すると、私には嫌な予感しかしなかったのである……
＜江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）＞
日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。
