仏教といえば、「悟りをめざす清らかな教え」というイメージを持っている人が多いと思います。ところが、仏教のはじまりは、そんなイメージとは正反対。

あまりに人間臭く危険なドラマに満ちていました。

たとえば、ブッダからして、仮面夫婦状態の末に、妻を捨て去った元王子。そして、弟子たちといえば、美女の死体に欲情する者あり、獣と交わるものあり、お寺に放火して逃げ出す者あり。おぞましい姿ですが、これこそが人間であり、また、仏教の原風景でもあるのです。

本書では、修行者の戒律をまとめた仏典『律蔵』などを手がかりに、恐ろしくも人間味溢れる仏教の真の姿を紹介します。
