職人としての腕はいいが、世渡りが下手で大きな仕事を任せてもらえない十兵衛。
愚鈍な様から周囲からは「のっそり」とあだ名をつけられていた。

しかし、谷中の感応寺に五重塔が建立されると聞き、なんとしても自分が普請を手掛けたいと思い、朗円上人の元へ頼みに行く。

十兵衛の造った見事な模型に感服した上人は、それだけの腕をもちながらの今の境遇に同情する。

本来ならばこの普請は感応寺の御用を務める源田が請け負うところで、源田は名人と名高く棟梁としても人望の厚い男だったが、上人は二人を呼びこの仕事をどちらが請け負うか話しあうように言う。

源田は二人で建てようと十兵衛に提案するが、十兵衛はその申し出を断るのだった。
