＜内容紹介＞
お見合い結婚で門野家に嫁いだ京子が異変に気づいたのは、結婚してから半年ほどたったときのことだった。
少しずつ、夫の愛が違う方向に向いていることに勘付いたのだ。愛の言葉の囁きはあっても、何となくうつろで機械仕掛けの声のようだった。
夫は、普段、一間にともじこもって本を読んでいるような時間が多く、それも書斎では気が散ってはいけないと言って、裏にあった土蔵の二階へあがって読書をするのが、若いころからの楽しみだった。
結婚してから半年ほどは、土蔵に出入りすることもなくなっていたのだが、最近また足しげく土蔵へ通うようになっていた。
ある時は隠れるように、またある時は夜中起き出して土蔵に向かう夫に疑いが深まってゆき、ついに京子は彼の後をつけて土蔵の中へ入ることにした。
そのとき、土蔵の二階から聞こえたのは、男女二人がひそひそ話す声だった……
＜江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）＞
日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。
