 「わたし」は、とある用事のため横浜に来ていた。震災のために荒廃した街を歩いていると、崩れた家の跡にボロボロのピアノがあることに気づく。

用事を済ませ来た道を戻っていると、どこからかたった一音、ピアノの音が聞こえた。辺りを見回すと、先ほど見つけたピアノが月の光を受けて鍵盤を浮かび上がらせている。
しかし、近くに人影は無く、不気味に思った「わたし」は家路を急いだ。
数日経って「わたし」は、同じ用事でまたあの街を訪れることになり、今度は通り過ぎずピアノの傍へ近づいてみるのだった。

じんわりと滲む寂しさが味わい深い掌編小説。

芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
