В сборник «Не позже полуночи» английской писательницы Дафны Дюморье, впервые опубликованный в 1971 году, вошли пять новелл, пять удивительных, совершенно непохожих одна на другую историй. Самая знаменитая из них, «Не оглядывайся», легла в основу мистического триллера английского режиссера Николаса Роуга с Дональдом Сазерлендом и Джули Кристи в главных ролях («А теперь не смотри», 1973). Все новеллы написаны уверенной рукой мастера, оригинально и увлекательно. Вероятно, точнее всего характер сборника определяет название рассказа «На грани»: в каждой истории автор подводит героев к интуитивному или осознанному выбору, нередко опасному.
