Поэтому выход в 1831 году первой, а годом позже и второй части рассказов "Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки" был встречен публикой и критикой с восхищением. "Вот настоящая веселость, искренняя, непринужденная. А местами какая поэзия!" - восторженно говорил Пушкин. Материалом для рассказов цикла "Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки" послужили детские воспоминания Гоголя об обычаях и преданиях, а также рукописи и документальные материалы о народных поверьях и фольклорных традициях Малороссии.
