Дмитрий Быков в книге "Борис Пастернак" так пишет об "Апеллесовой черте": "Осенью 1914 года Пастернак задумал и в начале 1915-го написал первую законченную прозу - новеллу "Апеллесова черта", о том, как Гейне, вызванный молодым поэтом на поэтическое соревнование, отбил у него любовницу и тем победил. Любимец Пастернака Гейне перенесен в начало двадцатого века, и его новая книга называется "Стихотворения, не вышедшие при жизни автора". По мысли Евгения Борисовича, молодой поэт символизирует раннего Пастернака, Гейне отчасти списан с Маяковского. Вся любовная коллизия - чистый вымысел. В новелле важна мысль о победе жизни над искусством - или, точнее, о том, что любовь и есть высшее проявление поэтического гения".
