Joseph Habakuk Jephson, a soldier who was hurt in the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, is in convalescence. One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.

John McVittie, a scientist tired of human beings, decides to retire in an isolated cottage on the shores of Scotland so he can work in his laboratory room quietly. During a strong stormy night, a boat named "Archangel" is shipwrecked near his house. Reluctant at first, he consents to see if he can be of any help. He saves the, apparently, only living survivor from the shipwreck...

The Cabman's Story (sub-titled The Mysteries of a London "Growler") is a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle first published anonymously in the Cassell's Saturday Journal on 17 May 1884. A cabman tells one of his clients three stories he experienced. The first one is about a dead passenger, the second about a passenger with a mysterious box, and the last one tells the story of a passenger who is a terrorist.

Toni L.P. Kelner has been writing thoughtful mysteries for over thirty years. She won an Agatha Award for her short story "Sleeping With the Plush" and her story "Baby Trap" was selected for inclusion in Best American Mystery and Suspense 2024, edited by S.A.
