About this listen

What if your life was a lie?

From the outside, Jay’s life seems idyllic–a 20-something who runs his family’s business with high disposable income and freedom. But in reality, Jay’s life is dictated by a bigoted, controlling, abusive father who insists Jay simply can’t be gay. Jay yearns for his own life with a dominant man, but it’s an out-of-reach pipe dream. When he meets Eric, a trained Dom, the most Jay can hope for is the occasional one-night-stand or quick fling.

Eric has his heart set on Jay, and not only for more than one night. Jay is the type of sub Eric could easily spend the rest of his life with. While trying to navigate winning Jay’s love, Eric’s life is further complicated by chasing down a killer who may be something other than human.

When Jay is targeted, Eric wants only to protect him. Can he save Jay’s life and win his heart as well?

Intriguing mix of BDSM an paranormal mystery

I admit, this book had me curious. Paranormal? Okay, interesting. BDSM? Sign me up!

I’ll also admit I enjoyed the execution of this book. I could relate to Jay as someone who wants to please his family, but knows he never will. He can’t not be gay. It’s who he is. But he also can’t have a boyfriend, so he hooks up with random guys. Eric is one of those guys. When that hook-up leads to the ‘OMG, you’re working with me’ scenario, I got my chuckle. That chuckle soon dissipated as the brutality of the murders, described in detail, began to emerge. Of course, based on his age and other factors, Jay’s a potential target.

Jay’s busy maintaining the façade of being engaged to a woman while enjoying submitting to Eric in the bedroom. For the first time in his life, he feels cherished. Loved. Cared for. This is all new to him. Eric wants to protect Jay and solve the gruesome murders. This should be old hat to him, but things are not what they seem.

When family dynamics, politics, and murder collide, clearly something had to give and I loved that this book kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

Samuel Mann is a new narrator for me and I thought he did a good job. I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to listen to something of his again. A good solid listen.

Pretty good!

4.25 Stars

Jay is being forced to hide that he's gay and to marry a girl by his father, a Senator, when he meets Eric, who embodies everything Jay has ever wanted in a man, a caring, trained dom, and who has been hired as Jay's bodyguard when a killer seems to be targeting people staying or working near the inn Jay manages.

I really liked Eric, he was very supportive of Jay in everything he wanted or needed, even when Eric wasn't exactly in agreement with it. I liked Jay, too, but I hated his reticence to stand up to his father to his own detriment. I really liked Eric and Jay together, they had great chemistry and their D/s dynamics worked well for them in almost all aspects of their relationship.

I loved Jay's mom, she was amazing! His father, though, was a poor excuse for a human being and got what he deserved.

The mystery aspect of the story was handled very well, I didn't guess who the killer was until it was pointed out to me. Overall, a very good read that I have no trouble recommending if you enjoy D/s romances with some mystery, gore and violence.

Samuel Mann is a new to me narrator, but he did a great job with this book. He brought Jay and Eric to life for me and injected the necessary emotions into the different scenes, be it the romantic, D/s, or violent ones. Definitely will be checking out more of his work.

Wish it were longer

Jay is the manager of his family’s resort when needing a night out and runs across Eric. They have this instant attraction. Things go a little further but in the morning each go their own way.
Eric is hired as head of security for the resort without Jay knowing it. Imagine the surprise when they each find out. Neither expected to see the other again. Eric is suppose to be finding out what is going on with the men’s bodies found in the forest on the grounds of the resort. Also Jay and Eric develop a deeper relationship and they also get to try and deal with Jay’s homophobic father. I feel the story is good but it might have been better if it had been longer and got more into the development of the characters and the mystery. I liked the narration by Samuel Mann. He really brought the characters to life.

Good mystery and sexy times!

This was kind of two stories in one… We have the romance between Eric and Jay and the mystery of who is killing people. When Eric is hired to provide security at the resort the Jay manages for his family, it doesn’t take long for them to fall for each other. The only problem is that Jay’s father insists that he can’t be gay and has provided him with a fake girlfriend.

This was a bit different from other paranormal books I’ve read. Someone or something is killing people and evidence that Eric has gathered points to it having been going on for years. This part of the mystery wasn’t really addressed but, in the end, I guess it didn’t really matter.

I didn’t guess who the killer was until nearly the end of the story so that was well done. There were some fairly gruesome scenes in this book and I’m not sure which would have been better – to listen to them being described as I did or to read them. Either way I think they might be a bit difficult for some readers to experience.

As far as I know, this is the first audiobook I’ve listened to that Samuel Mann and I think he did a good job narrating this story. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this book and would listen to more books performed by Samuel Mann and/or written by Elizabeth Noble.

A copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author or narrator.

So many great pieces

This book hit so many nails on the head for me. First, I'm a huge fan of romances where one character has a super controlling parent forcing them to stay in the closet and it's even better when that's complicated by political reasons as it is here. That means the other MC has to be a dominant personality (in this case literally) who helps them find the inner strength to break free and be themselves. Jay and Eric are perfect characters for this storyline. The addition of a serial killer mystery with hints of the paranormal was icing on the cake, especially as it fit perfectly into the romance plot with both working together. Samuel Mann is a new narrator for me but he did a fantastic job here with delineating characters and handling the emotions and suspense without ever going over the top. I really look forward to hearing more of his work.

Interesting story

This time both the author and the narrator were new to me.
I liked the writing style because I was in the story pretty quickly.
Jay goes out, far away from home because of his homophobic father and happens to meet Eric. The two are pretty hot together.
All the more surprise that Eric is the new head of security at Jay's family's resort to solve the murders.
Besides the attraction of Jay and Eric and some BDSM there is a criminal case to solve.
The story is interesting and there is also an ancient being floating around that needs to be tracked down. There are interesting developments and surprising twists.
I listened through the audiobook in one go, it wasn't very long either. I would have liked a few more chapters and would have enjoyed more in-depth character developments.
The audiobook narrator was great, I enjoyed listening to his voice. He portrayed the emotions well and I really liked his voice for Jay.
