 "The 120 Days of Sodom" is "the most impure tale that has ever been told since our world began". It was written by the Marquis de Sade, a french noble man, in the space of 37 days, while imprisoned in the famous parisian Bastille. Fearing confiscation, the Marquis de Sade, Donatien-Alphonse-François, had to write it on a continuous roll of paper, made up of small pieces glued together. The original manuscript is now on display in Paris, and is the third most expensive kept in France, insured for 12 million euros.

Four unbelievably wealthy aristocrats lock themselves in a remote medieval castle, along with forty-two victims and accomplices. Ensues the often unbearable description of perversions. This unfinished novel is a testimony to how dark the human soul can become when pushed to its limits.

Donatien-Alphonse-François, Marquis de Sade was a French aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher, and writer, famous for his libertine sexuality. His works include novels, short stories, and plays. De Sade is best known for his erotic works, which combined philosophical discourse with pornography, depicting sexual fantasies. He was a proponent of extreme freedom, unrestrained by morality, religion, or law. The words sadism and sadist are derived from his name.

Starts off interesting when laying out the scene but then just descends to repetitive descriptions of sexual perversions. It manages to be tedious, off putting and not in the least erotic. This version also has pretensions of being a wild uncensored version, but it does not include any of the torture (not realising this is the only reason people read this book). Find a version which includes all the story. You are not going to be horrified by this pointless edition.

As someone who has read the original I was expecting it to end rather early due to the last chapters being incomplete, however even parts that are finished in the original are not read here.

The performer was fantastic and it's just a shame it's all cut short.

The books is incomplete, I do not know if it's on purpose but it's very frustrating having paid the money and not getting the whole book... Disappointing.

Considering this is a classic text, there isn't much we can do to the story, as disjointed as it was. However, the narrator seemed to be hurrying mechanically through the narrative, whereas the text is more appropriate for an unhurried and emotive reading. I've been a member of Audible for a long time, and this is the first time I think the story and narrator were hopelessly mismatched.

A decent enough book let down by wooden narration

Given the uncensored nature of this recording, and the excellent delivery from the narrator, I was quite surprised when the book abruptly ended the way it does.

It's understandable to an extent, as the source material isn't complete, but this recording contains nothing at all past the point where de Sade's notes become the main bulk of the novel.

This book is similar to "Cities of the Red Night " by Willian Burrows. It is very descriptive and is not for the squeamish. One can understand why this book was banned (and still is) in so many countries.

I have been on the hunt for the most disturbing book out there and I believe I found it in this one. the story itself however ends mercifully abrupt. clearly written by a very ill mind.

It's only an excerpt.
Maybe 10% of the actual book.
I read the paperback years ago, twisted young fella that I was.
It was actually bought for by my ex wife.
I had a habit to testing myself to see where my limits were.
In this instance, it was literature.
The whole book is as comical as it is unbearable.
How unpleasant can one be when describing what others could do to one another sexually?
But then I preferred this to American Psycho.
The audio book is super disappointing, sadly.
I have loved almost all of the books I've listened to from Audible.
But not this.
It's a preview.
Best to buy the paperback, wrap a different cover around it and plough through the filth to the end.
After all, the gloriously abhorrent ending is possibly the 'best bit' of the novel, albeit deeply unpleasant.
But then, what were you expecting?

Having watched a film about Marquis de Sade some years ago and reading a little about this author, it came to no surprise what I was listening too. Though certain parts of the story were not to my taste, the narration of Paul Spera did the story justice and overall, I found 120 of Sodom an eye-opening and entertainingly shocking story.
